Colin MacKnight is a C.V. Starr Doctoral Fellow at The Juilliard School where he also received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. He studies with Paul Jacobs, Grammy award winner and chair of the organ department.

Colin serves as Assistant Organist at New York City’s Church of the Resurrection under music director David Enlow. Among other duties, he shares responsibilities for accompanying and conducting the professional choir which performs over 50 choral mass settings each year.

A frequent competition prize-winner, Colin’s first prizes and scholarships include the 2016 Albert Schweitzer Organ Competition, 2016 Arthur Poister Scholarship Competition, M. Louise Miller Scholarship from the Greater Bridgeport Chapter of the American Guild of Organists (AGO), the 2013 Rodgers North American Classical Organ Competition, and the Ruth and Paul Manz Organ Scholarship. He also won the New York City AGO Competition and advanced to the Northeast Regional Competition and won first place. As winner of the regional competition, he gave a “Rising Star” recital at the AGO National Convention in Houston in June 2016.

Colin also received the Clarence Snyder Third Prize in the Longwood Gardens International Organ Competition, second place in the 2014 John R. Rodland Memorial Scholarship Competition, second place in the 2013 New York City AGO competition, and was a finalist in the 2016 First Presbyterian National Organ Competition in Fort Wayne and the 2015 Taylor Organ Competition in Atlanta. In December of 2016, Colin and composer Jon Cziner were selected for an AGO Student Commissioning Project grant. Jon’s piece will be composed and premiered by Colin in 2017. Colin also received the Associate certification from the AGO at the age of 20.

This season, Colin will give recitals at National City Christian Church in Washington, DC; Church of the Resurrection and St. Patrick’s Cathedral in NYC; Central Congregational Church in Providence, RI; St. Stephen’s Church in Millburn, NJ; Syracuse University; and St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Morristown, NJ.

In January of 2013, Colin performed in New York City’s Alice Tully Hall on the American Public Media program, Pipedreams, with the Juilliard organ department. In November of 2014, he was one of 20 participants in an 18-hour marathon of the complete Bach organ works with current Juilliard organ department students, alumni, and faculty. This event was sponsored by the classical radio station WQXR. Recent performance highlights also include solo recitals at St. Thomas Fifth Avenue, The Cathedral of Saint John the Divine, and Church of the Resurrection in New York City; Cathedral of the Incarnation, Baltimore; Christ Church, New Haven; and the National Cathedral and National City Christian Church in Washington, DC.

Piotr Gajewski, music director and conductor of The National Philharmonic, writes that “Colin already has superior technique and tremendous musical sensitivity that will serve him well in what I predict will be a most successful music career.”
