les soûls d'amour
Performing Thursday, July 6, 2017, at 5:oo p.m.
Notre-Dame du Sacré-Cœur Chapel
“Raucous,” “refined,” “received with much pleasure”: the ensemble les soûls d’amour has garnered rave reviews since its 2015 debut, which “left the audience awed” (Boston Musical Intelligencer). Performing great and lesser-known Renaissance and Baroque repertoire from across the world, the ensemble consists of Molly Netter, soprano; Andrew Padgett, bass-baritone and hurdy-gurdy; Alana Youssefian, baroque violin; David Ellis, viola da gamba; and Jake Street, harpsichord and artistic direction. The members of les soûls d’amour are fervently devoted to singing the merits of love and a good drink with friends, and are equally comfortable in the church, the concert hall, and the coffee shop. From a lovesick Merula Ciaccone, to feisty and flirty arias of Purcell and Monteverdi, to the bawdiest drinking songs of the German Baroque and Spanish Renaissance, this ensemble proves that “antique composers and their modern day advocates could meet in the barroom and share great jokes” (BMInt).
